Severe Drought Continues Despite October Rain

October has been a rainy month, but despite the flooding rains, the severe drought in Central Texas continues.  The recent storms added roughly 50,000 acre-feet to Lake Travis and Buchanan, which pushed the lakes to 35 percent of capacity. Lake Travis and Buchanan need roughly an additional 1.3 million acre-feet to reach capacity.  While conditions are favorable for periodic rain storms this fall and winter, it will not be enough precipitation to end the drought.

Lake Travis and Buchanan provide water for millions of residents, businesses, industries and environment throughout the lower Colorado River basin.  Only inflows produced by rain, or rain falling directly on the lakes, can fill the lakes.

THIRST on Lady Bird Lake

If you have been near Lady Bird Lake recently, you may have noticed 14,000 white prayer flags along the lake.  In addition, there is a 38-foot tall cedar elm poised in the middle of the lake that is painted white and will light up in the evening hours.

In effort to bring attention to the 300-million trees that have died from the current drought and in effort to promote sustainability and water conservation, Women and their Work gallery launched the THIRST project along Lady Bird Lake. THIRST seeks to help Austinites learn to think like a drought.

This temporary art installation will be on display through December 20th at the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge.  For more information, click here.
